Social media will have a larger impact on this presidential election than the last simply because more people and organizations have recognized the fact that many turn to the sites for news. According to Paul Barnett, the Vice Chair of the Oregon Republican Party, his organization is utilizing social media more heavily than ever, especially as Election Day nears. “We didn’t have anything going on in social media four years ago,” Barnett said. “That’s basically happened in the last two years.” The organization’s Facebook site has multiple purposes. Barnett said he likes to post links to articles. He said he’s posted from a range of sources, including the Register Guard and national magazines with a conservative lean. Website manager Becky Lemler said when she uses social media, she is likely to be on the organization’s Facebook page or Twitter account. “I go on there and read the news that is of interest to the Republican Party,” she said. “I also post news so people don’t have to go to 50 or 60 other sites.” Chances are, however, people aren’t necessarily scouring the web for their news; they’re going directly to their Facebook or Twitter accounts for it. Last month, a Pew research study found that half of American adults under 30 get news from social media sites. This figure easily trumps newspapers and has equaled TV as a primary source of news. Andrew Becker, secretary of the Democratic Party of Lane County, said that Facebook has actually led to the creation of an advertising budget. “Before … we didn’t have something that we were clearly selling â€" just telling people to be democrats wasn’t enough,” Becker said. “But with Facebook, we can use the ad to draw people to our page. The more people on our page, the more people are drawn to all the candidates we represent rather than just advertising for one candidate.” Kris Turner, a student from Linn-Benton Community College, said he views videos and reads articles from factual sources that people post to Facebook and Twitter. “I was already leaning toward one side,” he said, “and through the things I read and watched, it’s made me feel stronger about my decision.” Turner is not alone, as the number of people relying on social media as a news source has doubled since 2010, according to the Pew study. “I’m in the closet about my republican view,” said Phyllis Bass, a retired resident of Eugene. “In this town, I don’t feel comfortable sharing my views.” Bass said that though she may not share her own viewpoints on Facebook, she’s gotten political news from her friends on the site. The shift to social media as a primary source of news is not a change that all support. Dan Andersen, a Political Science instructor at the University of Oregon, called the shift unfortunate but unsurprising. “That’s not to say it’s not without any redeeming qualities in terms of the political work it can do,” he said. “It can mobilize, which is critical, but it doesn’t provide information like other sources.” In addition to mobilizing, Andersen ceded that Facebook can be useful for keeping in touch with long-distance relatives, but at a cost of individuality. “I think it’s a mechanism for people to create an identity that is not a reflection of their true self,” he said. “It’s a very reductive way of interacting with people, stripped of interpersonal meaning,” he said. Reductive or not, social media has become a primary source of news, and political organizations in the Eugene area are beginning to utilize this burgeoning group.

The deal is; we aren’t always in a position of taking a vacation or launching into a weekend.   That means you need to find things you can do periodically to recharge your creativity or motivation by mentally stepping away from your usual, daily mode.   Give yourself a 15-minute vacation. I worked with a gal who left work everyday at lunch.   She didn’t always go out to eat.   Sometimes she would pick up dry cleaning or run an errand.   When we talked about her lunchtime, she explained that lunchtime was her sacred time.   She had to step out of the work environment and do something completely different.   This allowed her to restore her energy and helped to sustain her good mood. Calculus consists of two sub-branches which are called as Differential Calculus and Integral Calculus. Example 1: Find the derivative of the function, f(x) = 5x3 + 2x2. Solution: To find the derivative, the Power rule of the Derivatives says that: d(xn)/dx = n * xn-1 First step: We can distribute the derivative to both the terms: This gives; d (5x3 + 2x2)/ dx = [ d(5x3)/ dx ] + [ d(2x2)/ dx ] Using the above formula, we get: (5 *3 * x3-1) + (2 * 2 * x2-1) = (15 * x3-1) + (4 * x2-1) = (15 * x2) + (4 * x1) = (15 x2) + (4x) Hence the derivative of f(x) is f(x) = 15 x2 + 4x. Example 2: Find the anti-derivative of the function f(x) = 20 - x? Solution: Here the given function is f(x) = 20 - x. Power rule states anti-derivative of xn is equal to xn+1/(n+1). The anti-derivative of x is 1/2 x2. Using the power rule the anti-derivative of 20 needs to be found. 20 can be written as 20x0. Therefore, the anti-derivative of 20 x0 is 20x1. Hence anti derivative F(x) = 20 x -1/2 x2.

Check out what Jesse had to say about his time at Trinity College: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or rural is the campus? Did you feel safe on campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Jesse: The Trinity College campus is beautiful, with historic buildings and a landscaped central campus. The campus itself is situated in the middle of urban Hartford. Its a safe campus as long as you use your head. There are buses; however, Hartfords public transportation is not as reliable as other cities. I would recommend a bike. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Jesse: In my experience, the professors, advisers, and teaching assistants are very available. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Jesse: My undergraduate experience was a bit different in that I went back to school as a working adult, so I did not participate in dorm life as many undergraduates do. But there is plenty of opportunity to socialize through clubs, extracurricular activities, and sports. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Jesse: Trinity College has a reputation for being a policy-based institution. Political Science, Sociology, and History are its strong areas of study. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Jesse: I transferred to Trinity College in my junior year, so I do not have experience as a freshman. However, I made plenty of friends in and out of the classroom. Greek life plays a role in campus social life, but there have been recent efforts by the faculty to cut down on its impact because of the activities of a few fraternities. That doesnt mean that all fraternities or sororities are bad, however. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Jesse: The Career Center is very helpful for underclassmen. Many reputable companies recruit at Trinity College. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Jesse: The study areas are well-lit, quiet, spacious, and in modern facilities. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Jesse: Hartford, CT is a post-industrialized city with a vibrant West Indian, Latino, and African American community. Students from Trinity College who are not afraid to leave their collegiate bubble can experience a different community than the one they are learning in, or they can take a bus to West Hartford and have a suburban experience similar to their collegiate bubble. Students sometimes venture downtown, but they mostly stay on campus. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Jesse: The student body is relatively small, as are the class sizes. The largest class may have 25 to 30 students the smallest, under 10. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Jesse: One memorable experience I had was being able to study abroad in South Africa. When I returned, I took an African History class with a professor who was really engaging, and who opened me up to connecting with other students on campus as well as within the Hartford community.
